Local–federal cooperation in immigration enforcement is under a fresh spotlight in Helena and across Montana, as the Helena City Commission approved a 4–1 resolution that directs the Helena Police Department to essentially not cooperate with federal immigration law enforcement. The measure also limits the city’s sharing of data absent any legal requirement. How will this affect local public safety and law enforcement, especially on the critical and long-standing Missouri River Drug Task Force? Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton, a veteran of more than two decades of local law enforcement, shares his thoughts.
fully support keeping ICE to same legal standards as before and not this Trumpisized version. Please encourage all LEOs across the state to protect its citizens throughout MT.
We need a new city commission!!! You work for us and you better service us the people of Helena and work with ICE not against it.
This is so wrong. We need to be working together to enforce the laws, we have in place and protect US citizens. I live in East Helena and I’m so proud of the city council and EH PD and their commitment to stand with ice and ensure safety as border patrol, and ice officers do the job they’ve been assigned. Thank you, Sheriff Dutton and your service upholding the laws in our community
Federal law requires cooperation. Their job is to get illegals out of this country; something that benefits all in MT.
I am greatly angered and ashamed that those people in some position of authority are violating their oaths to MT and the US.
Get your heads on right or get out. If you don’t I hope the feds arrest you and that you lose those positions of authority!
