Industry leaders in Montana are doing the homework on the potential for small module nuclear reactors (SMR) to become a part of Montana’s energy future. The focus is on the utilizing Colstrip’s generation and transmission infrastructure, as the Biden Administration takes aim at closing the coal-generation facility with new regulations.
Jim Atchinson, Executive Director of the Southeast Montana Economic Development Corporation and former State Senator and miner Duane Ankney recently returned from a regional conference on nuclear energy and share their thoughts on the potential for nuclear power to replace the baseload generation currently provided by Colstrip. Rare earth mineral discovery and recovery are also on the plate.
