MTFWP, FWS, and the grizzly lovers at MSU and UM must come to grips with the fact that Montana is no longer Lewis and Clark’s wilderness. It’s rural Montana, rural America, dotted with farms and ranches providing our basic foodstuffs. We don’t need grizzlies wandering through it as though this is normal. It’s not. It’s playing Russian Roulette with the lives of farmers, ranchers, and their children. I dread the day, but I won’t be surprised when it happens, when some cooking mother or grandma sends one of the little ones out to the barn to get some eggs, and they are going to startle the grizzly hiding in there, and that bear, 9 times out of 10, will not hesitate. It will attack and keep attacking until it assures itself that the object of its attack no longer presents a threat. I have sent this same statement to MTFWP and I closed with my belief that the blood of that encounter will be on their hands. They could have done something about it but they are doing nothing but appeasing the whining protestors. That, in my view, is cowardly.
